What is the Biochemical Society?
The Society exists to communicate biochemistry internationally.
It achieves this by communicating with members via:
- the membership magazine the Biochemist and its online companion Biochemist e-volution
- the Society's book and journal publishing programme undertaken by it’s not-for-profit publisher Portland Press
- involvement in Society meetings by either attending or submitting proposals to run your own focused meeting
- participation and debate on policy, professional and education issues.

What membership category do I fit into?
I am a student - why should I join?
Student membership to the Biochemical Society provides you with access to a wealth of information about educational and careers issues that are relevant to you. From the young biochemist to post-graduates, we will provide you with the resources to enable you to make informed career choices and help you to get the job you want.

I am in my second research post - why should I join?
Young Researcher membership to the Biochemical Society means that you pay less, at this early stage in your career, but lose none of the benefits of Full Membership.
Why should my school take out Society Membership?
Schools Membership ensures that your organisation receives a copy of the Biochemist six times a year – each edition has a special schools page – and offers an opportunity to catch up on current molecular and cell biology research. Teachers in your organisation will receive free places at Teachers’ Workshops.
Why would my organisation take up Networking Membership?
This is open to not-for-profit organisations. Networking Membership offers both your organisation and the Society the two-way benefit of exchanging information about science policy, your activities and the key people in your organisation. the Biochemist and Biochemist E-volution are two excellent organs by which life science news and views are disseminated. Your organisation would also have the opportunity to exhibit at a Society meeting at a discounted rate.
When will my membership begin/end?
Biochemical Society membership runs for twelve months from the month of joining.

Free access in 3 simple steps:
- Put your name, address and membership number in an e-mail
- Send to subscriptions@portland-services.com
- Receive your username and password and go online

How can I claim my 25% discount off Portland Press books?
Portland Press is the publishing arm of the Biochemical Society and both membership and book orders/journal subscriptions are handled by Portland Customer Services. When you phone, fax or email an order, simply state that you are a Biochemical Society member and you will receive a 25% discount!

Submit the application and it will be referred to the Chief Executive of the Biochemical Society.
