Policy Activities

Policy work supports and promotes biochemistry by identifying and acting on issues in science and education policy and public affairs that affect the Society, its members, and the general public. Policy aims are achieved by:

  • Providing information and advice to the government, media, and the public.
  • Producing and distributing very widely on-line a monthly science policy report containing national and international science policy and education news gleaned from science journals and newspapers.
  • Preparing and submitting responses to consultations by major decision-making bodies, or producing position papers, on matters such as government science and education policy, the funding of teaching and research, the education and training of life scientists, and ethical issues.
  • Promoting and supporting careers in the life sciences.
  • Facilitating networking between life scientists, and supporting engagement with the public.

The work is led by the Society’s Policy Committee. This Committee carries out regular membership consultations to learn the views of Biochemical Society members on topical policy issues. Because many of these issues are generic across the life sciences Policy Committee acts wherever possible through the larger Biosciences Federation (and formerly through the UK Life Sciences Committee) in order to achieve a more powerful voice. This applies particularly to producing position papers and responses to consultations.
