Get Involved

The breadth of the Society's scientific coverage is determined entirely by its members. All members are encouraged to play an active role within the Society by interacting with one or more of the seven Theme Panels or via the IT Supported Groups. The Theme Panels are the 'drivers' of the Society's Scientific Meeting programme and ultimately report to the Meetings Board. If you are a member of the Society, and have an idea for a meeting, please follow the links to your Theme Panel of interest, or get involved in an IT Supported Group. You can also submit a proposal directly to the Society.

Theme Panels

The Society’s scientific coverage is encompassed by seven Theme Panels. Each panel has 15 members and a Chair, all of whom are drawn from the membership at large. The Chairs of the Theme Panels also form the Meetings Board which is Chaired by the Honorary Meetings Secretary.

The seven theme panels are:
I Genes
II Molecular Structure and Function
III Bioenergetics and Metabolism
IV Cell Biology
V Signal Transduction
VI Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
VII Development and Disease

IT Supported Groups

Is your science covered by a Theme Panel? If not, you can still influence the Society’s scientific coverage as part of an IT supported Group. The IT supported Groups are informal groups of scientists who make use of individual web pages hosted by the Society, to promote discussion of topics for conferences, identification of research expertise, requests for materials, collaborators, protocols etc. These IT Supported Groups 'meet' via the web and are made up of like minded people who do not wish to be affiliated to a particular Theme Panel. IT Supported groups are also encouraged to get together once a year at the BioScience Meeting.

Current IT Supported Groups are:
It is envisaged that enhanced use of the Society's web pages and IT supported facilities will involve a larger proportion of the membership in Society activities.
